The theme of this material is about imagology, as a new direction of research in the literature’s study. It presents a series of definitions, elaborated by researchers from different linguistic areas, the basic concepts of imagology are reviewed, its subject matter is defined. We have insisted on the etymology of the name of the discipline and the issues discussed in its various evolutionary periods. It insists on the etymology of the discipline’s name and the aspects concerned in different periods of development and in its most important sectors. Finally, imagology studies the totality of imagery, imaginary and symbolic representations, stereotypes and clichés or the ethno-types that people make about themselves and about the other people. |

Sunt prezentate un șir de defi niții ale acesteia, elaborate de cercetătorii din diferite arealuri lingvistice, trecute în revistă conceptele de bază ale imagologiei, este definit obiectul ei de studiu. Am insistat asupra etimologiei denumirea disciplinei și a problemelor discutate în diferite perioade de evoluţie a ei. Sinteza tuturor defi niţiilor pe care imagologia literară le primește de la cercetătorii din diferite arealuri lingvistice constituie cea mai largă și mai complexă definire a disciplinei.
