Rezumat

Demographic processes are the beginning of many trends that determine the socio-economic development of the country. Based on experience from other European countries, the Republic of Moldova proposes reforming childcare leave and childcare allowance (up to 3 years), motivating women to reintegrate more quickly into the labour market. On the other hand, these measures may be in contradiction with the interests of families or parents with children. A specific problem for the Republic of Moldova is the capacity and low quality of the existing day care services, and the duration of maternity and childcare leave in Moldova, which comes to compensate the lack of state institutions and private kinder gardens. The article is done based on the sociological study "Parents between working need and family responsibilities" performed between August-September 2018 by the Centre for Demographic Research from NIER. The applied research method was the semi-structured sociological interview with mothers with pre-school children (up to 6 years). Mothers involved on the labour market have a conflict of interest and, in the absence of facilities the strategy for combining family and work life leads to reduced or postponement of fertility. In the absence of sufficient solutions, women choose to leave the labour market for a longer period than to face working conditions that do not allow them to balance their professional and family responsibilities.
