Agro-food sector has a key role in Moldova’s economy, while the food processing industry provides about 40 percent of total industrial production of the country. Besides economic role, the sector has an important social function, especially in rural areas. Almost half of the rural population is traditionally engaged in agriculture, but this sector faces numerous social and economic problems that are born by local producers. Economic problems of agriculture have made a lot of labor force to migrate in other sectors of economy or to emigrate. Imports of agricultural products from the EU are three times less concentrated than exports. A solution to recover the competitiveness of Moldovan farmers was harvesting organic produce, so-called pure or organic agriculture. Thus,
Moldova can get a real chance of penetrating foreign markets, especially the European one where there is a growing demand for organic products. To expand organic farming system in Moldova were established national legal regulations on the production, processing and use of organic food products in accordance with international standards in this field. Moldovan agriculture has a potential; natural, human and less economic potential for the development of this sector. |
