The Black Sea Region located at the intersection of Russian, EU and USA interests is transforming from a „forgotten sea” in a region of geopolitical importance. The beginning of XXI century is marked by a series of structural and procedural changes in international relations and the development of a non-polar world implies a complex transition with metamorphoses of actors and their interests at the micro and macro level. Black Sea region is characterized by a series of key paradoxes that have defined its profile throughout history. These complex issues and challenges are becoming more pronounced, and if not countered, are likely to strain further the climate of the region. This article identifies and illustrates these paradoxes, in particular the ones with reference to globalization versus nationalism and security dilemmas. The goal is to contribute in assessing the current state of the region and to discuss the regional implications of the Black Sea on Moldova. |
