Currently, the waste problem becomes more important because of increasing of waste amount and sizes of dump sites. It leads to further deterioration of the environment, especially near human settlements. On national scale only 50% of the population benefits from sanitation, services - urban share of approximately 80% and only 20% in rural localities. Although environmental protection management in Moldova is supported by about 35 legislative and 50 Government Decisions, legal aspects of waste management need further development. At present, the most widely used method of treating domestic waste is landfill. Wastes collected on such sites serve as an important source of soil, groundwater pollution and have a negative impact on the health of the population. In this context, sanitation and waste management in urban settlements should become an important objective for the governmental and local authorities.
