The problem of elite it’s a new one both in European an Romanian historiography. In general, when we speak about elite the main word becomes power because in all the fields we have the minority which has the power and rule and the rest of people who are governed. There are many opinions about different types of elite and their role in society, but almost all researchers agree that popular masses need to be ruled and this role is taken by representatives of the elite. The founders of the theory of elites are sociologists N. Machiavelli, G. Mosca, V. Pareto, M. Weber which use as criterion of dividing society into elite and masses policy position. Anyway, it is very clear that this problem is more complicated because we also have elite in economic or military field. It is hard to place limits when we treat elites as social groups because as usually they influence each other and sometimes even can cooperate. Anyway, elites represent a social reality and they continue to rule in modern society in different fields od activity.
