Rezumat

Ethnic prejudices and stereotypes, as mental mechanisms, are of particular interest in the context of complexity of the reality of social groups, with which we share space every day. Thus, in the range of intersubjective and intergroup relationships, there is a tendency to use pre-existing cognitive schemas in evaluating others, cognitive processes, playing a fundamental role in organizing the social world, through the patterns we choose to clarify information, thus creating a priori ideas about those around us. In such a context, with the risk of losing differences, the members of a certain group become impossible to distinguish from each other, apparently having the same characteristics. Thus, prejudices arise from the need of the mind to use specific mechanisms of simplification, organization and schematization, to cope with the extreme versatility of objective existence, becoming functional for those who manifest them, through social categories, which guarantees a worldview in accordance with own expectations. For this reason, although very subjective, there is a tendency to assert an objective truth, supported by absolute evidence based on observations or common clichés, generally shared, despiteany real or truthful confirmation of the facts, the power of stereotype, configured as the core of prejudices, being rooted in deeds over which exaggerations and crystallizations are built. This rarely reflects the characteristics of a group, most often having a sociocultural character, which is based on universal acceptance, even when the evidence shows a lack of basis. In this way, stereotypes and prejudices respond to our "need" for rapid processing of information from the outside world, which pushes our intellectual system to implement indispensable categorization strategies, introducing external data into predefined categories. Therefore, both stereotypes and prejudices are embedded in mental images with affective connotations, which lead to the expression of rigid and pre-constituted judgments towards a person or a group, having the predominant role in the development of ethnic attitudes.
