In young literary criticism there can be distinguished two types of critics: central and marginal, peripheral. Central critics are usually critics of published works, they are postdoctoral fellows, and eternal students till they enter the academy. They have
to write only about GREAT writers about GREAT books and demolish everything that is not GREAT. They are gregarious, they know how to stay in history and are admired for this skill. Marginal critics perform translation, interpretation, communication, etc., anything that can provide freedom from palavering cultural nomenclaturists. Energetic, creative and non-conformist, they could encourage innovation, intelligence and elegance, destabilizing the wonderful literary and cultural system as a whole. The canon would thus become a receptacle of vivid works, popular with vivid audience. |
