Human beings need a regular supply of food and water and an essentially continuous supply of air. The requirements for air constitute 10–20 m3 per day. In humans, the pulmonary deposition and absorption of inhaled chemicals can have direct consequences for health. Chisinau is the capital of Moldova. The area of the city is 571.6 km2, and the population has reached 795 thsd. The main emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere are produced by thermal power stations and vehicles. At the end of 2014, the city had more than 690 thousand road vehicles (including 512,5 thsd. cars). Scope: to identify and quantify present exposures to chemicals emitted into the atmosphere by transport in Chisinau that may cause health effects. Method: The road traffic was calculated in accordance with EMEP/EEA emission inventory guidebook (2010). Health effects of transport-related air pollution were evaluated in accordance with the WHO recommendations (2005). Results: In the number of the surveyed objects were included 13 major streets in all districts of Chisinau. The results of counting the traffic flow per year by the modes of transport and the seasonal dynamic of pollutant emissions from the all vehicles are presented in table 1. Table 1. Traffic flow by the categories of transport in Chisinau, units/hour (mean data) The highest intensity of traffic flow and levels of pollutant emissions were accounted in the spring- summer period. For the first time in thirty years the assessing of the relations between the air pollution and morbidity in population in Chisinau was held. This assess showed a direct correlation between the level of transport emissions and endocrine, cardiovascular (infarct), digestive and genitourinary diseases among adults and children. |
