The SME sector, also called “the backbone of the economy”, plays an important role in the development of a national economy. In the Republic of Moldova the sector has emerged as a result of the transition from centrally planned to market economy in the late 80s. The SME sector is the largest source of profits and creating new jobs, being the most attractive for economical agents. The ability of local economic development in the country is determined by the presence of the SME sector which constitutes 98.0% of the total number of enterprises, its share in GDP is 35.5%, 46.0% of total sales revenue comes from small entrepreneurs. They own about 30% of the turnover in the country and 58.7% of the total number of employees are employed in this sector. Creating a SMEs sector similar in performance to that of the EU, is the guarantee of fruitful collaboration in the development of this sector and a real integration of Moldova into the European Union |
