The way knowledge is stored is still a mystery. Cognitive researchers put forward two focal models for knowledge: the network model and the schema model. Network theory tends to present a rather mechanistic view of mind, modelled after the interconnections of computer memory. Schema theory presents a more creative, goal-oriented view of mental activity. A schema is a comprehensive mental model which is used to systematize memory, to focus attention, to interpret experience, and to codify actions. The present article aims at approaching modality through the perspective of mental schemata, as the usage of English modal verbs in texts produced by native and non-native speakers appears to depend upon cultural and contextual aspects, namely upon different conceptualizations of the semantic notions of modality in different speech communities. There are specific ‘modality schemata’, directly derived from the prototypical physical experience, to each speech community. Progressively, such schemata are displaced by the same community first onto the sphere of socio-personal experience (as deontic modality) and then onto the mental sphere of logical-cognitive experience (as epistemic modality). |
