Morbidity of non-therapeutic operations for penetrating abdominal trauma A retrospective study was started to evaluate morbidity associated with non-therapeutic
operations for penetrating abdominal trauma. During a 56 months period, 204 operations were performed for penetrating abdominal injuries. Of these operations 66 (32,3%) were nontherapeutic. Complications were noted in half of patients and included: atelectasis – 4,5%,
pneumonia – 3%, deep space infection – 4 ,5%, surgical wound infection – 1,5%, prolonged
ileus – 7,6%, small bowel obstruction – 1,5%, delirium – 10,6% and others. The average hospital stay for uncomplicated non-therapeutic operations was 6,2±0,33 days, and for those with complications 9,4±0,83 days (p<0,01). We conclude that non-therapeutic operations for penetrating trauma are associated with significant morbidity. Even minor complications significantly increase the length of stay. |
