The establishment of Jews in the Principality of Moldavia has been a result of expansionist policy of Tsarist and Habsburg Empires that in agreement with Prussia divided Poland between them. The changing of the judicial status of Jews determined a great bulk of them to move in other countries, including in the Romanian Principalities. In the second half of the 18th century the Jews played an important role in the economic life of the Principality of Moldavia. Jews manifested special abilities in commercial sphere as well as in manufacturing. Jewish community participated also in the process of the creation of the local national bourgeoisie. For their part, Moldavian princes promoted a policy of
tolerance and benevolence toward the Jews. |
