Behavioural forensics has long been used by law enforcement agencies in crime investigation. Profiling is a technique used to help identify and apprehend unknown offenders by creating a characteristic psychological and behavioural profile. Such an investigative technique is based on the idea that an offender's behaviour can reveal personal and psychological characteristics that can be used in identification. Forensic profiling involves detailed analysis of the circumstances of the crime, including the offender's behavioural patterns and tendencies, which can be used to develop a behavioural and psychological profile of the offender. Including useful information about the offender, the motives for the criminal act, psychological characteristics and other relevant character traits, profiling is also an empirical method of gaining insight into the offender's personality. For these reasons, the subject matter of the present scientific approach is interdisciplinary in nature, referring to both forensic science and criminological science. In the first case, profiling underpins the approach to an effective strategy for the detection of crime with unknown perpetrators, and in the second case - criminological prevention of crime through the revelation of biopsychosocial traits that characterise the personality of offenders of a particular type. Moreover, criminological psychology underlies the application of profiling, which in this case provides the inherent link between the fields of forensic and criminology.
