Political correctness refers to a recent phenomenon, originating in the praiseworthy intention of avoiding the use of offensive labeling to refer to the less favored categories of the population, a fact, which has lead to utter displays of intolerance. This phenomenon can be encountered at the level of language, political ideas, attitudes and behavior, and the consequences on the individual range from conformity to alienation. Thus, from the intention of promoting non-discriminatory morals, the situation has evolved into the conjuncture al enforcement of social constraints which endanger certain fundamental rights and liberties. Reviewing the favorite subjects in the promotion of political correctness, as well as analyzing their consequences from the perspective of the public discourse, are the prerequisites for placing political correctness among the ideologies of our contemporary world.
