This study aims to raise awareness of the importance of the protection of human rights and freedoms. The integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European area implies the alignment of our state with European standards, because the European Union is based on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and res-pect for human rights. The authors point out that an effective and important means for the protection of fundamental human rights is the recourse to international jurisdictional bodies, and the situation regarding the appeals of Moldovan citizens to the ECHR is analysed. The authors of the study note that the issue of respect for human rights is linked to that of the inde-pendence of the judiciary and the legal profession, which is an essential condition for ensuring the rule of law and fair and proper justice. In conclusion, it is specified that only by respecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of every person can contemporary problems of prime importance be solved effectively and in the long term.
