Rezumat

Introduction: drug-resistant epilepsy and associated comorbidities influence the lives of people with seizures, forcing the appearance of specific behaviors manifested by impulsivity, aggression, apathy, passivity, shyness, difficulties in social adaptation, anxiety and depression. Objective of the study: to identify and determine the behavioral characteristics of persons with drug-resistant epilepsy. Methods: 102 subjects with epilepsy were evaluated (62 persons with drug-resistant epilepsy and 40 with seizure free epilepsy), with a mean age of 33.9 (±10). Behavioral particularities were assessed with Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory and the Cheek-Buss Shyness Scale. This study took place at the National Epileptology Center, Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, in 2021. Results: Our study demonstrated that there is a significant difference of aggression and hostility in subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy compared to subjects with seizures free epilepsy. High hostility was registered in 41% of all subjects with epilepsy, from which 60% in subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy and only 10% in subjects with seizures free epilepsy. High aggression is present exclusively in subjects with drug-resistance epilepsy (2%). Furthermore, indirect aggression, nervousness, disobedience, mistrust, feelings of guilt, aggression and hostility are higher in subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy compared to subjects with seizures free epilepsy, while there were no significant differenceinphysical aggression, negativism and verbal aggression. Also, we observed a significant differences (t=3.04 p=0.003) between the level of shyness of subjects with drug-resistant epilepsy compared to those with seizures free epilepsy. Conclusions:this study confirme that behavioral issues are more pronounced in persons with drug-resistant epilepsy. Therefore, we recommend psychological evaluation and psychosocial interventions for all persons with drug-resistant epilepsy, toreduce excessive behavioral manifestations and improve social relations and the quality of life.
