Characteristic of endothelial cells subpopulations involved in the
angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis
Filopodia have been identified on endothelial cells from the tip of the sprouting for half a
century, but the key role of these TIP cells in vessels branching have been identified in the past
few years. Recent studies have discriminated in addition to TIP cells that are responsible for
migration and leading the way, Stalk cells that trail behind the TIP, elongate the stalk, improve
intercellular junctions and lumen formation, and the most recently discovered Phalanx cells that
are the most quiescent and stabilize the branch, determining the tissue perfusion and
oxygenation. Discovering of these endothelial cells subpopulations allows better understanding
of angiogenesis, and its consequent clinical manipulating. In this paper, based on the most recent
achievements in the field, the authors give a brief phenotypical and physiological description of
each endothelial subpopulation convicted on vessels branching. |
