Background. Food allergies are becoming a global problem and represent a significant burden for allergic children and their families, with physical and emotional effects. Assessing the quality of life is an important aspect in determining the impact of the disease on the patient. Objective of the study. Assessing and comparing the quality of life of young children and adolescents with Ig E-mediated food allergy. Material and Method. A descriptive, comparative study was performed, which included 30 children with Ig E-mediated food allergy. Patients were investigated according to a unique protocol, which included complex questioning and examination. The quality of life of patients was assessed by using specific questionnaires (FAQLQ-CF, FAQLQ-TF, FAQLQ-PF). Results. The average FAQLQ (Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire) score was significantly higher and reflecting a lower quality of life in adolescents compared to younger children. The average score of social and dietary limitations, the average emotional impact score were also higher in adolescents. Limitations of family activities due to food allergy in children of any age significantly worsen their quality of life and the well-being of all family members. Conclusion. The quality of life of adolescents with food allergy is affected more than in younger children, which is directly reflected in all areas of their daily lives (emotional, dietary and social). |
