Background. Aging - a multidimensional event that promotes disease, medical and social decline, inducing vulnerability - 15% at age 65 and 30% at age 90. Addressing vulnerability requires diagnostic and prevention algorithms for healthy and independent aging. Objective of the study. Identification of vulnerable elderly through Vulnerable Elders Survey-13 (VES-13). Material and Methods. The retrospective study included 1158 geriatric records. Vulnerability was established through VES-13: age over 75 years, self-assessment of health and autonomy (ADL and IADL). Categorical variables were presented as percentage or number, continuous variables were expressed as arithmetic mean. Results. The mean age of the patients in the study was 71.64 ± 0.1 years, the vulnerable group older than 75 years - 29.18%. The results of self-assessment of health revealed 30.56% of patients with poor health. Difficulties in performing household activities were reported by 13.06% of patients and need for help with daily activities - 25.26% of the elderly. According to VES-13, 24.51% of the elderly were vulnerable. Conclusion. VES-13 can be used in screening for vulnerability. The multidimensionality of vulnerability requires the determination of the causes and consequences of vulnerability in order to establish treatments in order to maintain autonomy and quality of life. |
