Specific to modern era is that economic power passes from feudals to the bourgeoisie, and in order to gain political power, the latter applied different methods, either to fight openly or purchase titles of nobility in various ways. Unfortunately, referring to territories once incorporated into Russian Empire, the issue in question was until recently only under ideological “scrutiny” of Marxist-Leninist historians, thus the phenomenon was not analyzed in full dimensions. Based on analyzed documentary sources and consulted monographic literature, we can say that the phenomenon of embourgeoissement of nobility and ennoblement of bourgeoisie had some particular features in Bessarabia, different from the rest of the empire. This phenomenon was accelerated by measures taken in order to eliminate the old laws of the country, and the inclusion of the province into socio-economic system of the empire, becoming significant especially after 1830. On the other hand, the part of the boyars who failed to demonstrate their nobility for the purpose of maintaining dominant positions, was an early source prone for embourgeoissement and only later, as the local privileges diminished, the embourgeoissement phenomenon will become wide spread also among those who managed to enlist into Russian nobility. On the other hand, with the broadening of civil rights for the bourgeoisie, but also due to other measures adopted by the state, the phenomenon of ennoblement of bourgeoisie declines, although it will not disappear, turning from a necessity into a mere elitist fad. |
