An audit of AINS prescriptions administered to 100 postoperative patients was done utilizing medical and prescription records through the last day of hospitalization. The NSAID prescription numbers were correlated with the number of hospitalization days (R²=0.71). Figures show that only 36% of patients were given correct dosages for the duration of the NSAID prescription. The number of analgesic medicines prescribed for one patient was from 1 to 7. [I don’t know what the authors intend to say here.] An excessive number (>3) of analgesic medicines were prescribed for one in five patients. Nearly half the patients (48%) were concurrently prescribed medicines that potentially could provoke dangerous interactions with the NSAID. Furosemid, indirect anticoagulants, and glucocorticoids were used in 89% of these cases. Inattention or errors in these risk factors and NSAID prescriptions were found with 57% of the patients. |
