Rezumat

Torsion of the vermiform appendix is a rare condition that presents with symptoms analogous to those of common acute appendicitis; thus, it is often diagnosed during surgery. The first case was described by Payne in 1918, since then another 65 cases were reported in English specialty literature. According to the mechanism of torsion, it can be primary or subsequent to other pathological conditions like faecolith, mucocele, carcinoid tumor or lipoma with affecting both the pediatric and adult populations. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Appendectomy (either laparoscopic approach or open one) is considered the optimal treatment option.
