The objective of this reseach was to evaluate a sample of female parents of maize hybrids for grain yield, thousand – kernel weight, sizing of the seeds into four fractions, field germination of seeds in cool soil and laboratory germination during five years of storage. The results indicated significant differences among female parents for all studied characteristics that contribute to the stable and economical production of hybrid seeds. A relative strong relationship between middle fractions of seeds, that passed through the 9-8 mm screen, and thousand – kernel weight was established, respectively r=0,586 for inbred lines and r=0,698 for crosses. Female parents with flint kernel were better for field seed germination in extra early planting time and during the five years storage. The suitability of some inbred lines from Reid Iodent heterotic group as seed parents of early maize hybrids was confirmed. |
