| Rezumat | ||||||
The main documents governing the status of the prisoners of war were drafted at the end of the 19th century and in the 20th century. Of these, the most important provisions regarding how they were treated are included in the Geneva and Hague Conventions. The purpose of the present study is to observe and analyse the way in which prisoners of war were protected according to these modern legislative acts. These provisions, codified in the international humanitarian law, guarantee the life of the combatants that were captured by the enemy, as well as their status in captivity. Also, the adoption of these Conventions called for an agreement among the different signatory states. In this way, there was consistency regarding the application of norms included in the humanitarian law which served in the protection of prisoners of war. |
