Rezumat

In the present article, the problem of ageing and its special features in the Republic of Moldova is examined. Based on the demographic analysis it is shown that a continuously increasing proportion of older people in the total population and the changes in population age structure were very favorable in terms of socio-economic development over the last ten years. Among these one can mention the following:increase in numbers of working age population, pupils, students and women of childbearing age. It is noted that the depopulation phase with demographic dividend, when the reduction of population is accompanied by increasing share of working age population, will close up in the RM soon. In the near future, another stage - depopulation without demographic dividend - will start, when the number of working age population decreases continuously causing an increase in demographic burden. Given the fact that the future changes in the population age structure are defi ned quite clearly, their anticipation through developing the appropriate measures will allow all the structures and society as a whole to be adapted to these long-term demographic changes. Even though the ageing process is inevitable, its consequences are largely determined by approach to this problem, elaborated regional programs.
