Despite the constraints and tight control that had been applied to Soviet me-dia, its contribution to the achievement of the goals set by the regime were most often below the expectations of Soviet authorities. Media were often criticized with-in the closed meetings of party and Soviet bodies for not being able to meet for the most the great tasks related to the transformation and mobilization of Soviet socie-ty, even when it was about achieving short-term goals. Consequently, the lack of effectiveness of Soviet media appears as a red thre-ad throughout the entire existence of the USSR, both within incessant discussions of party organs behind the closed doors, and through the official congress resolutions of the CPSU and decisions of the CC of the CPSU. At the same time, its role in perpetuating the Soviet totalitarian regime by imposing a limited discourse in society and its contri-bution to legitimizing the party leadership cannot be neglected. |
