Romanian historiography is widespread idea about that France played the leading role in the unification of the Romanian Principalities and Russia followed the foreign policy of Napoleon III. During the period 1855-1858 France collabo-rated with Russia on the issue of unification of the principalities the opposing posi-tion was taken by Austria and the Ottoman Empire, who did not want the unifica-tion of these two provinces. Russia claimed the outset and the union to approach France, her old enemy. Russia supported France along with the double election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza though was against the Paris Convention of 1858. Russia clai-med union with France because it wanted to destroy the alliance that was raised in the Crimean War. The main enemy of Russia was England who wanted this to be humiliated and isolated in the international arena. Supporting of the Union of Ru-ssian was revenge against Austria which had allied with France and Britain to li-mit its expansionism in the Balkans. |
