The controversial concept of Belgian/ (being Belgian)/Belgian identity occurred in the 1970s, when a group of intellectuals, writers and artists who refused to integrate in the official institutions, and political and ideological movements of the time. It emerged as a hyper theme in fictional works; it turned into the topic of sociological files and essays, becoming more and more specialized and hence receiving nuances and connotations that enlarged its semantic field. It even operated changes on the Belgians’ perspective on their own identity, as well on other francophone’s on them. Currently, Belgian identity is the focus of hundred thousand web pages (an overwhelming number for an in-depth approach to the phenomenon), which we have analyzed and synthesized in the present paper without pretending to have accomplished an exhaustive study. Our main concern was to bring forth the semantic plethora of the term. After having excluded hundreds of web pages that provided no real background, yet abundantly used the term (annuals, glossaries of obscure resources, different discussion groups), our conclusion is that, on the one hand, virtual Belgian identity includes paradoxical meanings that are often opposite to one another, and, on the other hand, that most of the definitions are so incomplete and shallow that they cannot possibly define the sense of belonging to the Belgian culture, ideology and values.

Lansată în anii ’70 de un grup de intelectuali, scriitori şi artiști care au refuzat înregimentarea în instituţii oficiale şi în curentele politice sau ideologice ale vremii, noţiunea de belgitate a provocat de atunci numeroase controverse. Apare ca hipertemă în opere de ficţiune, face obiectul unor dosare sociologice şi eseuri, rafinându-se, căpătând nuanţe şi conotaţii care antrenează alunecări de sens importante în plan semantic, în imaginarul colectiv al belgienilor şi al percepţiei identităţii lor de către alţi francofoni. Mai nou, belgitatea face obiectul a sute de mii de pagini web (număr descurajant pentru un demers de cercetare aprofundat) pe care le-am analizat şi sintetizat în articolul de faţă, fără a pretinde însă că am întreprins o explorare exhaustivă. Scopul principal a fost de a pune în evidenţă pletora semantică a termenului. După ce am eliminat din cercetarea noastră sute de pagini web care serveau de simplu portal pentru totul şi nimic despre Belgia/belgieni, dar se prevalau de noţiunea de belgitate (anuare, glosare de resurse obscure, diverse forumuri de discuţii), concluzia noastră este că belgitatea ,,virtuală” îmbracă sensuri paradoxale şi chiar contradictorii, că majoritatea definiţiilor sunt lacunare şi superficiale pentru a defini sentimentul de apartenenţă/non-apartenenţă culturală, ideologică, afectivă la valorile belgiene.
