A language becomes valuable and important through the community who speak it. It represents a part of their identity as a people, a part of the treasure transmitted from generation to generation. Throughout history, any linguistic community goes through different stages of evolution that can divide or unite its members, depending on geographic, social, political or other factors. All these metamorphoses can generate the fragmentation of a language into dialects, languages or autonomous languages. The linguists and the dialectologists have fixed a set of criteria that serve as a basis for determining the degree of similarity or difference between a language and one of its varieties, in order to certify the autonomy of a language. |
