The issue of tolerance and intolerance towards the Armenian community in the Principality of Moldavia during the sixteenth century is approached from a historical, political, economic, religious and cultural standpoint. Throughout their history, romanians were tolerant of minority communities on ethnic and religious terms. Some exceptions were made during the reign of Stephen IV of Moldavia and Ștefan VI Rareș, who, for various reasons, have promoted a policy of persecution towards Armenians in Moldavia. Persecutions were episodic,the tolerant attitude being reestablished, important in this sense is the reign of John III the Terrible, called The Armenian (1572- 1574). |
