The paper examines the main demographic trends and changes occurred in the Republic of Moldova since the early 1990s with a special focus on a continuing fertility decline. A particular attention is given to the problem of reproductive losses equal to half of annual number of births presently. The main indicators of reproductive health such as perinatal mortality and morbidity, infant mortality, maternal mortality, abortion rate and incidence of extrauterine pregnancy registered in Moldova are far beyond the same indicators in highly economically developed countries. The current situation observed in the field of reproductive health in Moldova would benefit a great deal from reorganization of Mather and Child healthcare system. |
