Modern citizenship studies focus on social conditions and mechanisms that influence and shape attitudes towards citizenship. The role of personality patterns in the analyzed attitudes is generally omitted. Despite the above, individual traits could significantly contribute to the development of active citizenship attitudes. Personality traits can both facilitate the development of new attitudes and obstruct the accumulation of new experiences that are essential for the formation of active attitudes towards citizenship. Relationship between young people's attitudes towards citizenship and personality traits will be discussed. Psychological profiles of young citizens are drawn up based on the citizenship concept proposed by Zalewska and Krzywosz-Rynkiewicz. The profiles were developed based on the results of an international survey of 4,000 students from 15 European countries who were divided into three age groups (11 – late childhood, 14 – early adolescents, 18 – late adolescents). Two types of instruments were used in the survey: the Active Citizenship Questionnaire and battery of psychological tool measuring psychological traits and dispositions – BIG 5, values, locus of control, optimism, responsibility. Results show that basic psychological traits are rather weakly related to citizenship activity although subjective dispositions can influence young people citizenship activity. |
