Code-switching is the practice of moving between variations of languages in different contexts. There are a number of possible reasons for the switching from one language to another. There are different perspectives on code-switching (social motivations/ syntactic and morpho-syntactic factors etc.) While code-switching had previously been investigated as a matter of peripheral importance within the more narrow tradition of research on bilingualism, it has now moved into a more general focus of interest for sociolinguists, psycholinguists and general linguists. Some linguists use the terms code-mixing and code-switching more or less interchangeably, especially in formal studies of syntax, morphology, etc. Shana Poplack uses different names for various types of switching: inter-sentential switching, intra-sentential switching, tag-switching and intra-word switching. |
