Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the environmental pollutants, formed as a result of pyrolytic processes. The principal route of human exposure to PAHs is the dietary intake of contaminated food. Concern about human exposure to PAH is connected not only with the toxicity of these chemical compounds, but also because many substances from this group are carcinogenic. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified PAHs such as: benz[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, chrysene, dibenz [a, h] anthracene, and indenol[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene as group B2, probable human carcinogens. The objective of this study was to calculate the exposure and dietary intake of PAHs with more consumed food commodities by the population of Chisinau. Selected samples (56) of smoked meat products, dairy products (cheese, cottage cheese and butter), milk, fish, and eggs were analyzed by using of gas chromatographic method with mass spectrometric detection. For exposure calculation were used a median and the 90th percentile of the PAHs content in food products and food consumption rates, according to official statistical data. The PAHs exposure assessment was carried out according to guidelines [1]. Calculation of the exposure and daily intake with food commodities of benzo(a)pyrene, PAHs groups of probably carcinogenic to humans, and also the total amount of PAHs was carried out. It was determined that the total exposure of (BaP) was in the range of 0,008 μg/kg/day – 0, 25 μg/kg/day and its daily intake was 0, 0001–0,004 μg/kg bw/day. According to WHO, the maximum/median intake levels of BaP should not exceed 0, 36/0, 05 μg/kg bw/day. The exposure of carcinogenic PAHs groups was in the range of 0, 7-3, 46 μg/kg/day. Daily intake of probable carcinogens was 0, 01-0, 05 μg/kg bw/day and the total amount of PAHs – 0, 11-0, 27 μg/kg bw/day. According to our results the main contributors of PAHs to the total dietary intake level are the meat products. Despite detecting concentration levels of PAHs below the recommended level, it is necessary to assure continuous monitoring of PAHs contents and assessment of their daily intake with food. Therefore, further studies need to be developed in order to strength food safety and reduce health risks associated with the contaminated foods consumption. |
