In this paper we study the English idioms that contain the lexical component “eye” in their structure using the method of Cognitive Metaphor Theory (G. Lakoff) and other approaches taken from the cognitive linguistics practice (A. Wierzbicka, Z. Kövecses). The examples under analysis have been collected from dictionaries and classified according to the “image of the eye” which is associated with a certain emotive conceptual category. Another approach used in this paper is that of the cultural analysis of idioms introduced by D. Dobrovol’skij on social interaction, material culture, “textual dependence”, cultural symbols, etc. Having conducted the study we identified the cultural peculiarities in the conceptualization of emotion categories in the English language and have identified specific “images of the eye” that are associated by the English with a certain emotional concept.
