Introduction:The aspiration of foreign bodies (FB) in children’s respiratory tract is a major urgency, even in the asymptomatic cases that can endanger the child’s life at any time. Aims: The aime of the research was to study the etiology of airway FB in children of different ages. Methods: The cohort analytical study includes 106 children hospitalized in the Pulmonology Clinic showing a positive history of foreign body aspiration. They underwent a bronchoscopy examination for diagnostic and treatment. Results: The study found a high frequency of airway FB in children under 3 years (88,9%: 95CI, 81,1-94), with a slight predominance of girls (57.5%: 95CI, 47,6-67,1). The FB extracted from the bronchial tree after bronchoscopy were predominantly of organic origin: seeds (sunfl ower, watermelon), nuts and other foods (meat, apples). Conclusions: The aspiration of FB in the respiratory tract is frequently met in children of 1-2 years old, with a major predominance of organic foreign bodies, usually sunfl ower seeds and nuts. |
