Rezumat

Fluvial navigation is an important element in the transportation industry of Europe, having more than 37000 km of waterways on which there are transported millions of tons of freight and thousands of passengers. The maritime and inland waterway standards and regulations require a reliable positioning solution for the safe navigation of the vessels in any type of environment and navigation phase. EGNOS V2 is providing a Safety of Life (SoL) service for civil aviation applications since 2011 and specifications for a maritime SoL service are foreseen for EGNOS V3. Currently, the augmentation method for fluvial navigation is DGNSS. The aim of this paper is to provide the results of a study that investigated the possibility of adopting EGNOS as an augmentation system for inland waterways applications. The GEURIW ("GNSS Environment and User Requirements Characterization in the Danube River ") project was develop in the framework of the European GNSS Evolution Programme (EGEP) and had as the main objective the performance comparison between EGNOS and DGPS on the Danube River. The activities involved GNSS measurements collections along the Romanian sector of the Danube and the analysis of the currently used navigation requirements and user needs.
