This study addresses the development in the academic professional career of the Bessarabian historian, Alexandru V. Boldur (1886-1982). Archival documents and memoirs of the historian reveal the obstacles he encountered in his academic career and the series of delicate situations that this remarkable scholar had to face in order to traverse all the stages from assistant to professor. The documents confirm the political and human nature of the obstacles that stood in his path of professional ascension, which caused him various spiritual hardships and material losses. However, a number of original documents also reveal the historian’s consistent and tenacious fight in order to obtain and hold the didactic- research posts he both desired and truly deserved. This study also emphasizes the ending of Alexandru V. Boldur’s professional career in 1947, when after only 25 years of academic activity he was forced to retire.
