The article presents the results of a study focused on the estimation of CH4 emissions from enteric fermentation in the Republic of Moldova during the 1989-2005 period, for being included in the national inventory of greenhouse gases in the frame of Second National Communication (SNC) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The methodologies used are based on the Good Practice Guidance and Uncertainty Management in National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (IPCC, 2000) and IPCC 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (IPCC, 2006). The obtained results revealed that during the 1989-2005, CH4 emissions from enteric fermentation have reduced by 64%, from 97.68 Gg to 35.09 Gg. This situation is due to the significant reduction within the period of the livestock population as well as of the main productivity performances (average annual milk production, milk fat content, average annual wool production, percentage of females that give birth in a year, average weight gained per day etc.). The study has been realised with the financial support of the GEF and UNEP in the frame of the project “Republic of Moldova: Enabling Activities for the preparation of the SNC under the UNFCCC”.
