In the early 1870s, the Austrian authorities were willing to set up new universities. Representatives of Bucovina also asked then the opening of a university in Cernăuţi. The opening ceremony of the German University in Cernăuţi was held on October 4, 1875. In the period 1875-1919, the University of Cernăuţi with German as
teaching language, functioned with three faculties: Theology, Law and Philosophy. The first teaching staff of the University of Cernăuţi consisted of 28 persons, including 14 Germans, 10 Romanians (eight being at the Faculty of Theology) and 4 Ukrainians.
At the University of Cernăuţi worked in total 127 full and part time professors (15 at Faculty of Theology, 44 – at Faculty of Law, and 68 – at the Faculty of Philosophy), of which 87 Germans, 20 Romanians, 12 Jews, five Ukrainians. Over the existence time
of the Austrian University in Cernăuţi, there worked 44 rectors, including 22 Germans, 11 Romanians, 9 Jews, and two Ukrainians. The University of Cernăuţi played an important role in rising of the level of public education and culture of population of
Bucovina. |
