This article discusses French newspapers from the early months of Liberation from Nazi occupation. After four years of multiple governing bodies, and of social and political rifts, it was fundamental that the internal community re-inscribe itself in a common tradition as a strategy of national identification. Newspapers played a fundamental role in this process. This article analyzes specific rhetorical and discursive strategies used by newspapers to
initially incite the general population to insurgency, and later to resolve the lack of unity that threatened to corrode the very social fabric of France at liberation, doubly menaced by the threat of a second foreign occupation. Lastly, the focus is on the purge, a judicial exercise which posited the future composition of the national community. Newspapers clearly developed an identificatory symbolism, which in turn participated in an exclusionary gesture whereby certain members of the community were rejected from future conception of national life. |
