Rezumat

The present case study is intended to research the indirect strategies in ternary exchanges of more extended speech events within a context model. This is a process-oriented qualitative study, focused on the semantic interpretation and pragmatic deconstruction of implied meanings. The concepts “speech event”, “context model” are drawn from the cognitive linguistics and experimental pragmatics, while the concept of “rapport management” is a recent development in sociopragmatics from the face management theory. The methodological procedure consists in defining the concepts and applying them in the analysis of the selected case study, thus informing the analysis and deriving more lucid deductions. The speech events under scrutiny are highly competitive, bordering to conflictive. This being the main theme, several sub-themes derive from this one: the modest place and presence attributed to women in the British Parliament. All the means and instruments for exerting influence, force and pressure are used extensively, proceeding from discussions, negotiations, compromises, consensus, a “rainbow coalition” and then the coercive instruments: intimidation, bribery, deception, even physical beatings, blackmail in relation to the opposition party. The loyal service to the highest mission but also the dedicated commitment to the modest interests of the constituents are brought into the discourse eventually as a strongest argument.
