Background. Oxidative stress (OS) is essential in the pathogenesis and progression of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Objective. the study aimed to estimate OS indicators and antioxidant activity in T1DM children aged 10 - 18. Methods. The research was carried out on 90 pediatric patients, distributed in two groups: study (n=45), consisting of cases with T1DM (disease period ≥ 5 years), and control (n=45), consisting of conditionally healthy subjects. The OS intensity was estimated by determining the serum concentration of advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). In addition, the antioxidant system was evaluated by determining the total antioxidant activity of the serum and the level of serum proteins with an antioxidant role. Results. Protein and carbohydrate peroxidation markers showed higher mean values among the study vs. control group (AOPPs, p=0.027; pentosidinelike AGEs, p=0.044, vesperlysines-like AGEs, p=0.021). However, the total antioxidant activity of the serum, evaluated by the ABTS (p=0.027) and CUPRAC (p=0.034) methods, was lower in the sample of pediatric subjects with T1DM, compared to the sample of conditionally healthy subjects, the opposite being in the case of antioxidant proteins (ceruloplasmin, p=0.021; total serum protein, p=0.513). Conclusion. The current research assessed oxidative stress by quantifying the oxidant and antioxidant activity imbalance. In general, the level of oxidants was significantly higher in the pediatric, pediatric subjects with the T1DM group than in the conditionally healthy ones. Conversely, the antioxidant activity was lower in the baseline group participants than in the control group. |
