The names of most journalists who worked in the Bessarabian Russian-language press in the 1920s–1930s are less known or just forgotten. However, the then journalistic community occupied an important place in the social and professional structure of the Russian population of Chisinau. The creative and life biographies of the people who belonged to this community, their daily social practice, their contribution to the city’s social and cultural life represent undoubted research interest for ethno-sociologists and culturologists. The phenomenon of Russian-language Bessarabian journalism of the 1920s-1930s relates to a large influx of intellectuals who left Soviet Russia. Belonging to different social statuses and occupations, they had a significant impact on the development of the newspaper-publishing business. In this context, the author has studied the life and professional activity of V. O. Nedzelsky (1883-1940), one of the brightest journalists from Chisinau and a man of tragic fate. In his various literary activities, a special place belonged to theatre criticism. His reviews and problematic articles present an important source for theatre historians, allowing to reconstruct the image and specificity of the Bessarabian Russian stage of the late 1920s and during 1930s. |
