Rezumat

The given article analyzes historiography of research into specificity of development and activity of an interesting ceramic centre, which existed in Berezhany (Ternopil region). Printed publications have been divided into two groups and three subgroups, namely works about the history of Berezhany and the Seniavski castle, as well as publications about local pottery. In particular, the author of the given paper has analyzed information from numerous scholarly sources, i.e. monographs, dissertation abstracts, theses, articles, conference proceedings, exhibition catalogues, albums and scholarly and artistic books, as well as materials on local history. There has been stated that authors of such researches did not predominantly dive deep into the history of the ceramic centre in Berezhany, or specificity of its work, and the works by the local potters were not explored in the context of tendencies in Ukrainian folk ceramics. Instead, art critical analysis mainly consisted in singling out a peculiar technique of earthenware décor (fliandrivka), or mentioning certain shapes of earthenware from this ceramic centre. The given research is based on materials from city archives in Berezhany, Ternopil and Lviv, as well as collections in libraries and local history rooms in the schools of the region or other areas of Ukraine, and some museums in Poland (Warsaw, Krakow and Przemyśl). All the above-mentioned sources of the research were discovered during scholar’s trips to these places and expeditions. One can also find important information in catalogues of the 19th-20th cc. ethnographical exhibitions, scholarly and artistic papers, memoirs of city residents, illustrations of the earthenware and other documents. The author of the article has studied registry books of birth, marriage and death of people living in Berezhany and its suburbs (Adamivka and Rai) as well as documents on property. Therefore, a number of local potters of the 19th- early 20th cc. have been mentioned here by the author for the first time.
