Vărzărești Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements east of the Carpathians. It is the first documented monastic institution in the area between the Prut and the Dniester. It is mentioned as a boundary in a document dated April 25, 1420, issued by the chancellery of voivode Alexandru cel Bun. At the time of its foundation, the monks used manuscripts to officiate the divine services, copied in other monastic centers in the Romanian space, but, unfortunately, these have not been preserved. The monastery was closed after numerous Tatar raids and only in the second half of the 18th century, after reactivation, another library of printed books was established. The books being very expensive, they were protected by the owners, in our case the monks from the monastery, who, upon a possible transfer, took the books with them, a real fortune. Some of the books from Vărzărești were in the library of the nearby Căpriana monastery, documented in the 15th century. The monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities and the inventory and books confiscated. It was reactivated in the 90s of the 20th century. The books in the current library do not have handwritten notes, which makes it impossible to identify the owners or the circulation routes. Currently, the book heritage of the Vărzărești monastery is composed of 53 Romanian books, but there are also some books in Russian. The state of conservation is good and they are used in the officiating of divine services by the priests of the monastery.
