Rezumat

Academic libraries have long been the heart of the university. But as information rapidly went digital and could be accessed from anywhere, libraries began exploring other avenues of service and resources to both assist those now researching outside the library and to better utilize our physical spaces in new and engaging ways. This presentation will discuss two “non-traditional” services being offered at an American science and engineering library to meet changing campus needs and to provide new learning opportunities for students. The USPTO’s Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) program has locations within libraries across the county. The USPTO trains librarians to provide non-legal information services to users about patents and trademarks. This presentation will briefly discuss how the University of Nevada, Reno’s PTRC assists a variety of users with intellectual property needs, including its use in research and application within entrepreneurship, and why the service fits within the library’s overall mission. Additionally, this presentation will briefly discuss the same library’s makerspace. In 2012, the science and engineering library acquired its first 3D printer and since then, the space has expanded to include a wide variety of fabrication tools and services, include 3D scanning, vacuum forming, and laser cutting. The makerspace is utilized by researchers, instructors, and students from across campus and has been integrated into a variety of classes.
