Rezumat

One of the characteristics of the last decades is the alarming and continuous growth of nutritional diseases, such as diabetes, which has as its main cause the absolute or relative insulin deficiency, which is characterized by the disruption of all types of metabolism. Currently, worldwide, diabetes has gained a wide spread, with the Republic of Moldova registering a number of approximately 115,000 patients, of which over 800 are children. This pathology causes irreversible changes in different organs and tissues. Thanks to the discovery of insulin, thousands of lives have been saved, this being an effective remedy for treating the given condition. However, the problem of the treatment of type II diabetes remains unsolved at the moment. Of particular interest is the study of certain preparations that can influence the course of diabetes or mitigate to a certain extent metabolic disorders. Currently, phytotherapy is considered a process and a scientific concept in the sense of establishing on new bases an adequate treatment with the help of medicinal plants, becoming an interdisciplinary science, which involves a collaboration between chemotherapy, organotherapy, ionotherapy, psychotherapy and food hygiene. The hypoglycemic, immunomodulatory and regulatory properties of medicinal plants can protect the patient from various complications by regulating lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Medicinal plant preparations reproduce the effects of chemical therapy, improve glucose absorption by tissues and positively influence the body's immunity. The research results highlighted the hypoglycemic, insulinotropic and antioxidant effect of extracts from medicinal plants such as: Sambucus nigra L., Satureja hortensis L., Achillea millefolium, Ocimum basilicum, Prunus domestica, Verbascum densiflorum, Rubus fruticosus L., Cydonia oblonga, etc. The given studies have demonstrated that these biopreparations do not show adverse effects and have a polyglandular action, so they can be administered as adjuvants in the disorders of carbohydrate metabolism.
