Rezumat

Neutron scattering experiments on superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x reveal that the scattering vanishes for energy transfers above approximately 50 meV. In order to examine Alexandrov's suggestion [1] that the disappearance of magnetic scattering is due to the narrowness of the bipolaron band, we present a variational method which can be used to investigate the bipolaron energy dispersion in anisotropic materials. The method is then applied to a model of bipolarons in YBa2Cu3O7 and a value for the bipolaron energy bandwidth is found compatible with that derived from neutron scattering experiments.
